Listing on Etsy is easy, but figuring out what you actually take home after a sale is not. The platform layers a flat listing fee, a percentage transaction fee, and a payment processing fee on top of each other — and the percentage fees are charged on the buyer's shipping payment too, which catches most new sellers by surprise. This Etsy fee calculator breaks every charge down line by line so you can see your real payout before you price your next listing.

Type in the item price and what you charge for shipping. The sliders for the listing fee, transaction percentage, and payment processing defaults come pre-filled with the current US Etsy schedule ($0.20 listing, 6.5% transaction, 3% + $0.25 processing). Adjust them if you sell in another country or have opted into Offsite Ads, and the result card updates instantly.

How to Use

  1. Enter the Item Price — the amount the buyer pays for the product itself.
  2. Set the Shipping Charged to Buyer. If you offer free shipping, enter 0. This number matters because Etsy's transaction and processing fees are calculated on the combined item-plus-shipping total, not just the item.
  3. Leave the Listing Fee at $0.20 unless Etsy has changed its schedule. You pay it once when a listing goes live and again every four months when it auto-renews.
  4. Confirm the Transaction Fee at 6.5% for US sales. Etsy applies this to the entire order total, including shipping and gift wrap, but not to sales tax collected on your behalf.
  5. Check the Payment Processing rate (3.0%) and the Processing Fixed Fee ($0.25). These are the Etsy Payments charges; if your shop is outside the US, replace them with the rates on your Payments Settings page.
  6. Read the result card: Order Total, each fee line, Total Etsy Fees, your highlighted Payout, and the Effective Fee Rate — the share of every order that Etsy keeps.

The payout figure is what hits your bank account after Etsy takes its cut. It is not your profit yet: you still have to subtract the cost of goods, materials, packaging, shipping supplies, and any ad spend.

How Etsy's Fees Actually Add Up

Etsy charges three core fees on a typical US order:

  • Listing fee — $0.20. Flat, per listing, charged when you publish or renew. It is owed even if the item never sells, and it renews every four months until you deactivate the listing.
  • Transaction fee — 6.5% of the order total. The order total is item price plus shipping plus gift wrap. On a $25 item with $5 shipping, the base is $30, and the transaction fee is $1.95 — not $1.63, which is what you would get if you forgot to include shipping.
  • Payment processing fee — 3.0% + $0.25 per order. This is the cost of Etsy Payments. Like the transaction fee, it is calculated on the gross order amount including shipping.

The formula the calculator uses is:

Payout = (Item Price + Shipping) − Listing Fee − (Order Total × Transaction %) − (Order Total × Processing % + Fixed Processing Fee)

For a $25 item with $5 shipping: order total is $30, transaction fee is $1.95, payment processing is $1.15, and total fees are $3.30. Your payout is $26.70 — Etsy kept about 11% of the order. That 11% is the number to keep in your head when you set prices; anything below roughly 9–11% effective fees on small orders is unrealistic, and Offsite Ads can push it to 20% or more.

Why Shipping Matters More Than You Think

Because both percentage fees apply to the shipping amount, charging low shipping or offering free shipping actually shrinks Etsy's cut as a share of your revenue — but it also changes what the buyer sees. If you sell a $20 item and charge $8 shipping, Etsy takes 6.5% of $28 = $1.82 in transaction fees. If you instead sell it for $28 with free shipping, Etsy takes the same $1.82 on the same $28, but the buyer sees a higher price. The math on Etsy's side is identical either way; the difference is purely in how your listing appears in search and in the buyer's cart.

What does change your net margin is the $0.25 fixed processing fee. On a $10 order it is 2.5% of the price by itself; on a $200 order it is barely noticeable. That is one reason low-priced digital goods and accessories are harder to make work on Etsy than higher-t handmade items.

Examples

Example 1 — A typical jewelry order. A necklace listed at $25.00 with $5.00 shipping. Order total is $30.00. Listing fee $0.20, transaction fee $1.95 (6.5% of $30), payment processing $1.15 (3% of $30 plus $0.25). Total fees $3.30. Your payout is $26.70, an effective fee rate of 11.0%.

Example 2 — Free shipping on a $45 print. A wall art print priced at $45.00 with free shipping (shipping charged = $0). Order total is $45.00. Transaction fee is $2.93, payment processing is $1.60, plus the $0.20 listing. Total fees are about $4.72, and your payout is $40.27 — an effective rate of roughly 10.5%.

Example 3 — A high-volume supply sale. A bulk craft supply order for $1,000,000 (stress-test scale). Order total is $1,000,000. Transaction fee is $65,000, payment processing is $30,000.25, plus the $0.20 listing. Total fees come to $95,000.45, leaving a payout of $904,999.55 — the effective rate falls to about 9.5% because the fixed $0.20 and $0.25 fees become negligible at scale.

Example 4 — A $0 test order. If you enter an item price of $0, the percentage fees are zero, but you still owe the $0.20 listing fee and the $0.25 fixed processing fee. The calculator returns a payout of −$0.45, which is the correct warning: listing something for free still costs you money on Etsy.

FAQ

How much does Etsy take from a $25 sale?

On a $25 item with $5 shipping, Etsy charges $0.20 listing, $1.95 transaction (6.5% of the $30 order total), and $1.15 payment processing (3% of $30 plus $0.25). Total fees are $3.30, so your payout is about $26.70 — roughly 11% of the order.

Does Etsy charge fees on shipping?

Yes. Both the 6.5% transaction fee and the 3% payment processing fee are calculated on the gross order total, which includes the shipping amount the buyer pays. Sales tax collected on your behalf is excluded. This is why entering shipping correctly in the calculator matters.

What is the $0.20 Etsy listing fee?

It is a flat fee charged every time you publish a new listing or renew an existing one. Listings renew automatically every four months until you deactivate them, and you are charged the $0.20 each time — even if the item has already sold and the listing has been manually renewed for another buyer.

How do Offsite Ads fees change my payout?

If an order comes through an Etsy Offsite Ad, Etsy adds a 12% fee (15% for shops under $10,000 in annual sales) on top of the standard fees. This calculator does not include Offsite Ads by default; if you run them, add the percentage to your transaction fee input or budget for it separately. Orders driven by Offsite Ads can easily carry an effective fee rate above 20%.

Why is my payout lower than Etsy's fee page says?

Etsy's help center lists the percentages separately, so it is easy to mentally add 6.5% + 3% and assume you keep 90.5%. In reality the $0.20 listing fee and the $0.25 fixed processing fee are added on top, and the percentages are applied to shipping too. For small orders the effective rate lands near 11%, and for very small orders it can climb above 15%.

Is this calculator accurate for non-US shops?

No, not by default. The defaults ($0.20 listing, 6.5% transaction, 3% + $0.25 processing) match the US schedule. Sellers in the UK, EU, Canada, Australia, and elsewhere should update the transaction and processing rate fields to the figures on their own Shop Manager → Finances → Payment Settings page. The listing fee is $0.20 USD almost everywhere.

What is the difference between payout and profit?

Payout is what Etsy deposits into your bank account after its fees. Profit is payout minus your cost of goods, materials, packaging, postage labels, studio overhead, and any advertising or shipping supplies. Many new sellers mistake the payout for profit and end up working at a loss — always subtract your own costs before you set a price.
