"How old am I, exactly?" is a question that sounds simple but rarely has a simple answer. Your birthday comes once a year, so most people walk around with a rounded age — "I'm 36" — even though between birthdays you are really 36 years, 5 months, and 9 days (or whatever the math says). This exact age calculator gives you that figure from your date of birth: the complete years, leftover months, and leftover days, plus the total number of days and weeks you have been alive.

Type your birth date and, optionally, the date you want to measure up to, and every figure updates instantly. It is the same year-month-day difference used by calendar libraries and payroll systems, so the result is consistent whether you check today, next month, or next birthday.

How to Use This Age Calculator

  1. Enter your Birth Year as a four-digit number, for example 1990.
  2. Set your Birth Month from 1 (January) to 12 (December).
  3. Type your Birth Day, the day of the month you were born on.
  4. Leave the As-of date on its defaults to see your age as of the fixed reference date, or change any of the As-of Year, Month, and Day fields to measure your age on another date — the day you graduated, got married, or retired.
  5. Read the result card: Years, Months, and Days give your exact age, while Total Days Alive and Total Weeks express the same span in a single number.

The engine works out the difference by starting with whole years, then months, then days, borrowing a month or a year whenever the birth day or month falls later in the calendar than the as-of day or month. That borrowing step is what keeps the count exact across month ends, leap years, and leap-day birthdays.

How to Calculate Your Age by Date of Birth

Two dates do not subtract like ordinary numbers because months have 28, 29, 30, or 31 days. The correct method — used by dateutil.relativedelta, the open-source library this calculator mirrors — is to compare year, month, and day from the largest unit down:

  • Start with years = as-of year minus birth year.
  • Subtract months = as-of month minus birth month. If that is negative, add 12 months and subtract one year.
  • Subtract days = as-of day minus birth day. If that is negative, borrow the number of days in the previous month and subtract one month.

For example, born May 15, 1990 and measured on October 24, 2026: years = 2026 − 1990 = 36, months = 10 − 5 = 5, days = 24 − 15 = 9. No borrowing is needed, so the exact age is 36 years, 5 months, 9 days. The same birth date measured against a day earlier in the month borrows correctly instead of producing a negative number of days. When the as-of day equals the birth day, the leftover days count is zero — that is exactly your birthday.

Leap Years and February 29

If you were born on February 29, your birthday only lands on the real calendar day in leap years. The standard convention in common years is to advance your age on March 1 (or February 28, depending on the country), and this calculator uses the same day-by-day span so that your age advances on the correct anniversary regardless of how the calendar is drawn. Leap years also matter for Total Days Alive: because the engine counts whole Gregorian days between the two dates, every February 29 inside your lifetime is included automatically.

Why Exact Age Matters

Rounding your age to whole years is fine in casual conversation, but exact age shows up in real decisions:

  • School and sports eligibility. Age cutoffs for grade placement, youth leagues, and amateur competitions are checked in exact years and months, not the rounded number you give at dinner.
  • Legal milestones. The day you turn 18, 21, or the retirement age is a specific date, and knowing your precise age helps you plan documents, benefits, and notices.
  • Retirement planning. Whether you are 64 years and 2 months or 65 years and 0 months can change when pension or Social Security benefits are available. Claiming at 62 instead of your full retirement age can reduce a monthly benefit by roughly 30%, or about $500 a month on an average check, so knowing your exact age to the month directly protects your retirement income.

Examples

Example 1 — A straightforward birth date. Born 1990-05-15, measured on 2026-10-24. No borrowing occurs: the result is 36 years, 5 months, 9 days, equal to 13,311 days or about 1,901 weeks alive.

Example 2 — Month and day borrowing. Born 1990-11-30, measured on 2026-10-24. Because the birth month (November) is later than the as-of month (October) and the birth day (30) is later than the as-of day (24), the engine borrows: the result is 35 years, 10 months, 24 days, about 13,112 days or 1,873 weeks.

Example 3 — A birthday today. Born 2000-04-10, measured on 2026-04-10. The day and month match exactly, so the leftover day count is zero: the result is 26 years, 0 months, 0 days, equal to 9,496 days or about 1,356 weeks.

Example 4 — A leap-day birthday. Born 2020-02-29, measured on 2026-10-24. The engine counts exact Gregorian days, so the result is 6 years, 7 months, 25 days, equal to 2,429 days alive.

FAQ

How do I calculate my exact age?

Subtract your birth date from the date you want to measure, comparing year, month, and day from largest to smallest, borrowing a month or a year whenever the birth month or day comes later. Born 1990-05-15 on 2026-10-24 gives 36 years, 5 months, and 9 days. Enter your own dates above for the instant result.

What is the difference between age in years and exact age?

Age in whole years increments once a year on your birthday. Exact age keeps counting the leftover months and days, so it always reflects the true time elapsed since birth. This calculator returns both: the years/months/days breakdown and the total days and weeks.

How many days have I been alive?

The total days alive is the number of whole Gregorian days between your birth date and the as-of date, counting leap years automatically. Born 1990-05-15 and measured on 2026-10-24, that is 13,311 days, or about 1,901 weeks.

What happens if I was born on February 29?

The calculator counts the exact day-by-day span, so your age advances correctly whether or not a given year is a leap year. In common years your anniversary is treated consistently rather than being skipped, which keeps the total-days figure accurate.

Can I measure my age as of a past or future date?

Yes. Change the As-of Year, Month, or Day fields to any date. Set them to a past date to find how old you were on a specific day, or a future date to see how old you will be. If the as-of date falls before your birth date, the engine returns the absolute span; enter your dates in the natural order (birth first, as-of second) to avoid confusion.

Why does the as-of date use a fixed reference instead of today?

Using a fixed reference date makes the math deterministic and reproducible, so the same inputs always produce the same output. When you need your age on the real current date, just update the as-of year, month, and day fields to match it.
