Whether you are sizing a backyard deck, comparing two farm listings, reading a European floor plan, or bidding on a warehouse, area numbers only become useful once they are expressed in a unit your brain actually trusts. A lot of confusion in real estate, construction, and land measurement comes from mixing square feet, square meters, acres, and hectares without a clean conversion. This area converter calculator takes a value in any one of four common area units — acres, square miles, square feet and square meters — and instantly expresses it in any of the others, so you never have to remember whether an acre is 43,560 or 4,840 square feet again.
Type the number, pick the starting unit, pick the target unit, and the result card shows the converted value along with the same size expressed in square meters, square feet, and acres. Those three reference columns make the page useful even when your target unit is something unusual like square yards or acres.
How to Use
- Enter the Area Value you already know. It can be anything from a single square inch up to millions of acres; the engine handles the magnitude without rounding errors.
- Choose the From Unit — the unit that matches how the number was originally measured. The five choices are Acre (0), Square Mile (1), Square Foot (2), Square Meter (3), and Square Yard (4). Square feet covers US residential floor plans, square meters covers European and Asian listings, acres covers US land parcels, square miles covers counties and parks, and square yards covers carpet, fabric and flooring quotes. Hectares and square kilometers are not on the dropdown, but you can convert a hectare as 10,000 square meters and a square kilometer as 1,000,000 square meters before entering the number.
- Choose the To Unit — the unit you want the answer in. If you are comparing a US listing with one in Berlin, convert both to square meters. If you are reading a zoning notice, convert to acres.
- Read the highlighted Converted Value. Below it, the result card also shows the same parcel in square meters, square feet, and acres, so you can sanity-check the number against the unit you are most familiar with.
- Swap the From and To units to run the reverse conversion in one click. The relationship is linear, so 100 square meters in square feet and 1076.39 square feet in square meters use the same coefficient.
The Conversion Constants You Should Know
Every area unit on this page is defined in terms of the square meter, the SI base unit of area. Once you memorize a handful of constants you can do rough conversions in your head:
- 1 square inch = 0.00064516 square meters (the inch is legally defined as 2.54 centimeters).
- 1 square foot = 0.09290304 square meters, so 1 square meter ≈ 10.764 square feet. This is the most-used rough conversion: multiply square meters by ten, then add a bit.
- 1 square yard = 9 square feet = 0.83612736 square meters.
- 1 acre = 43,560 square feet = 4,046.8564224 square meters, or roughly 40% of a hectare.
- 1 hectare = 10,000 square meters = about 2.471 acres.
- 1 square mile = 640 acres = 2,589,988.11 square meters, or about 2.59 square kilometers.
The engine applies the simple identity result = value × (sqMetersPer(fromUnit) ÷ sqMetersPer(toUnit)). Because both sides of the ratio share the square meter, the calculation is exact and never needs a lookup table beyond the eight constants above.
Examples
Example 1 — Reading a European apartment listing. A two-bedroom flat in Berlin is advertised at 95 m². On this page, enter 95, choose From: Square Meter (3), To: Square Foot (2). The converted value is 1,022.57 square feet — close enough to a typical US 1,000 sq ft apartment that you can immediately picture the size, instead of guessing whether 95 square meters feels small or large.
Example 2 — Estimating a land parcel price per acre. A 1.2-acre lot in Texas is listed at $185,000. A buyer wants to compare it with a 5,000 m² parcel in Portugal listed at €160,000. Convert 5,000 m² to acres: the result is about 1.236 acres. Back in Texas terms, the Portuguese parcel is priced near €129,400 per acre; the Texas lot is $154,167 per acre. Even ignoring currency and tax differences, the side-by-side acre figure makes the comparison concrete.
Example 3 — Scaling a fertilizer or paint job. A 250 m² garden needs fertilizer rated at 5% nitrogen, and the bag label is written in pounds per 1,000 square feet. Convert 250 m² to square feet: 2,690.98 sq ft. The 5% nitrogen recommendation on the label, scaled to 2,691 sq ft, tells you roughly how many bags to buy without ever leaving the page.
Example 4 — State-park scale. A national park covers 0.85 square miles. Convert to acres: 544 acres. Convert to square meters: about 2,201,490 m² (≈ 220.1 hectares). Seeing the same footprint in three units makes it far easier to reason about trail length, visitor capacity, or fire-risk zones than staring at a single square-mile figure.
FAQ
How many square feet are in a square meter?
One square meter equals 10.7639 square feet (often rounded to 10.764). To convert roughly, multiply the square-meter value by 10.76, or multiply by 10 and add about three-quarters again. For the reverse, divide square feet by 10.764 to get square meters.
How many acres are in a hectare?
One hectare is exactly 10,000 square meters and equals approximately 2.471 acres. If you need a quick mental estimate, multiply hectares by 2.5 to get acres; the error is under 1.2%, which is fine for most land and farm planning.
How big is an acre in square feet?
An acre is 43,560 square feet, which is roughly a square of about 208.7 feet on each side, or a rectangle of 66 by 660 feet (the classic surveyor's chain definition). It equals 4,046.86 square meters or about 0.4047 hectares.
How many acres fit in a square mile?
Exactly 640 acres make up one square mile. This is why US township-and-range surveys divide counties into 640-acre sections: a section is one square mile, and quarter-sections of 160 acres were the classic homestead plot.
What is the difference between a square meter and a meter square?
They are not the same. A "square meter" (1 m²) is a unit of area — a tile 1 meter by 1 meter. A "meter square" usually describes a square of a given side length: "5 meter square" means a square that is 5 meters on each side, which is 25 square meters, not 5. Always be explicit when a contract or drawing uses either phrase.
Can I convert square inches to acres with this calculator?
Yes. Pick the units you already have and the ones you want. Because the engine routes every conversion through square meters, any pair — acres to square feet, square miles to square meters, or square feet to acres — resolves exactly without a lookup table.
