You finished writing at 11:48 p.m. and the only question that matters is: how many pages is that? Professors, editors, and grant reviewers often specify a length in pages rather than words, while your word processor reports words. This words-to-pages calculator bridges the two on the standard academic setting — 12-point Times New Roman, one-inch margins, US Letter paper — so you know before you export the PDF.

Type your word count, pick your line spacing, and the page estimate updates instantly. The tool also shows the single-spaced and double-spaced equivalent side by side, plus a reading time based on a normal adult reading speed. No guessing, no pasting, no hidden formatting surprises.

How to Use

  1. Enter the Word Count from your word processor's status bar. Microsoft Word, Google Docs, and Apple Pages all display the live word count at the bottom of the window.
  2. Choose the Line Spacing your assignment requires. Most college essays are double-spaced; blog posts, drafts, and screenplays are often single-spaced.
  3. Leave Reading Speed at the 200 words-per-minute default, or raise it if you skim quickly. This affects only the reading-time line, not the page count.
  4. Read the Estimated Pages on the result card as your primary number. Below it, compare the single-spaced and double-spaced totals to see how much spacing alone changes the answer.

The estimate assumes the conventional manuscript format. If you use a wider font like Arial, a larger point size, or wider margins, fewer words fit on each page and the true page count will run slightly higher than this estimate.

The Words-Per-Page Standard

For decades, editors and universities have anchored on one simple rule: a standard manuscript page holds about 500 words single-spaced and 250 words double-spaced when set in 12-point Times New Roman with one-inch margins. That is why a "ten-page paper" almost universally means roughly 2,500 words double-spaced, and why this converter divides your word count by 500 or 250.

The math is deliberately transparent:

Pages = Words ÷ Words per page

So 1,500 words at 500 words per page is exactly 3 pages single-spaced, and the same 1,500 words at 250 words per page is 6 pages double-spaced. Switching spacing doubles your page count without you writing a single additional word.

What Moves the Number

Three variables push the estimate up or down:

  • Font. Times New Roman is narrow; Arial is about 10–15% wider, so a page holds fewer words. Courier New, used in screenplays, holds only about 360 words per single-spaced page.
  • Point size and margins. Bumping from 12 pt to 14 pt, or widening the margins, lowers words-per-page by a noticeable margin.
  • Paragraph breaks. Extra blank lines between paragraphs, headings, and a separate title page all consume space that otherwise holds text.

Because these effects are small and well known, the 500/250 convention remains the default target that students and editors negotiate against.

Examples

Example 1 — A standard college essay. You have written 1,500 words and the syllabus asks for a "3–5 page double-spaced paper." At 250 words per page double-spaced, 1,500 words = 6 pages, so you are already at the top of the range; trim about 250 words to land cleanly at 5 pages.

Example 2 — The printing bill. Your campus library charges $0.12 per page for double-sided laser printing. A 3,000-word research paper at 250 words per page double-spaced is 12 pages, which costs about $1.44 to print. The same paper single-spaced at 500 words per page is only 6 pages and about $0.72 — half the cost.

Example 3 — The over-length assignment. A 10-page double-spaced capstone is about 2,500 words. You have written 3,000 words, which is 20% over the target, enough that a strict professor may dock your grade for exceeding the page limit. Run your own number through the calculator before submission.

FAQ

How many pages is 1,500 words?

At the standard 500 words per page single-spaced, 1,500 words is 3 pages. Double-spaced at 250 words per page, it is 6 pages. The exact figure depends on your font, margins, and chosen spacing.

How many pages is a 1,000-word essay?

1,000 words equals about 2 pages single-spaced or 4 pages double-spaced. This is a typical length for a short undergraduate response paper or a blog feature.

How many words is a 5-page paper?

Double-spaced, a 5-page paper is about 1,250 words (5 × 250). Single-spaced, 5 pages is about 2,500 words (5 × 500). Always match the spacing your instructor requires before converting.

Does line spacing really double the page count?

Roughly, yes. Double-spacing inserts a full blank line between every line of text, which halves the words per page from about 500 to 250. The same 2,000-word document jumps from 4 pages single-spaced to 8 pages double-spaced.

How long does it take to read a 10-page paper?

A double-spaced 10-page paper is about 2,500 words. At an average reading speed of 200 words per minute, that takes about 12 to 13 minutes. The calculator's reading-time line computes this for your exact word count.

Should I count words or pages while drafting?

Convert your page limit to words first (pages × 250 for double-spaced) so you know your target mid-draft. Word counters are far more reliable while writing than guessing finished pages, then convert back when you format.
