Whether you are billing clients, filling out a timesheet, or double-checking a paycheck, the first question is always the same: how many hours did I actually work? This hours worked calculator turns a simple clock-in and clock-out time into net daily hours, weekly hours, monthly hours, and annual hours. It also subtracts unpaid breaks and, if you enter your hourly wage, estimates your gross weekly and annual pay.

Enter your start and end times in 24-hour format, set the length of your unpaid break, and tell the tool how many days you work each week. Every figure updates instantly, so you can test an early morning shift, a late evening close, or an overnight run in seconds.

How to Use

  1. Enter your Clock-In Time in 24-hour time. Type 9 for a 9:00 AM start, 14.5 for 2:30 PM, or 22 for a 10:00 PM night shift.
  2. Enter your Clock-Out Time the same way. 17 means 5:00 PM. If you finish after midnight, simply enter the earlier clock number (for example 6 for a 6:00 AM end); the calculator automatically adds 24 hours to handle the overnight shift.
  3. Set your Unpaid Break in minutes. Most US employers deduct a 30-minute unpaid lunch, but some shifts include two 15-minute breaks that are paid, so adjust this number to match your actual agreement.
  4. Enter Days Worked / Week. A standard Monday-through-Friday schedule is 5; a part-time weekend role might be 2.
  5. Optionally add your Hourly Wage. Leave it at 0 if you only want to know hours; enter your gross rate to see weekly and annual pay estimates.

The result card shows your net hours per day, the highlighted hours per week, monthly and annual totals, and — when a wage is entered — your gross weekly and annual pay before taxes.

The Hours-Worked Formula

The math is straightforward time arithmetic:

daily net hours = (clock-out − clock-in, plus 24 if overnight) − break minutes ÷ 60

From there, weekly hours are daily net hours multiplied by days per week, annual hours are weekly hours multiplied by 52, and gross pay is hours multiplied by the hourly rate. A 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM shift spans 8 hours on the clock; a 30-minute unpaid lunch brings the net to 7.5 hours per day; working 5 days yields 37.5 net hours per week, or 1,950 hours over a 52-week year. At a $20 hourly rate, that is $750 per week and $39,000 per year in gross pay.

The overnight rule matters for shift workers. A 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM shift looks like clock-out (6) being earlier than clock-in (22). Rather than returning a negative number, the engine adds 24 to the end time, giving 30 − 22 = 8 hours on shift.

Why Breaks Are Deducted Separately

Under the US Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), employers generally must pay for hours the employee is "suffered or permitted to work," but bona fide meal periods that are uninterrupted and spent off-duty can be unpaid. A 30-minute lunch taken while you are completely relieved of duty is typically excluded from paid hours, while a short rest break of 5–20 minutes is usually compensable. That is why this calculator separates the shift length from the unpaid break: the 8 hours between 9 and 5 are on the clock, but only 7.5 of them are billable or payable.

If your break is paid, set the Unpaid Break field to 0 so the full shift counts. If you have two 15-minute paid breaks plus a 30-minute unpaid lunch, enter only 30.

Examples

Example 1 — The classic 9-to-5. You clock in at 9, out at 17, take a 30-minute unpaid lunch, and work 5 days at $20 an hour. Net hours are 7.5 per day, 37.5 per week, and 1,950 per year. Gross pay comes to $750 per week and $39,000 per year before taxes.

Example 2 — A lunchless shift. A nurse works 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, 4 days a week at $32 per hour, with no unpaid break. With the break set to 0, net hours are 8 per day and 32 per week. Gross weekly pay is $1,024, and the annual estimate is $53,248 — noticeably higher than the 37.5-hour comparison because no meal time is deducted.

Example 3 — An overnight barista. A shift runs from 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM with a 30-minute unpaid break, 4 nights a week at $18 an hour. Because the end time (6) is earlier than the start (22), the engine adds 24: the shift is 8 hours, net 7.5. Weekly hours are 30, gross weekly pay is $540, and annual gross is $28,080.

Example 4 — A high-rate consultant. A freelancer bills $1,000,000 per year-equivalent for a 9-to-5, 5-day week with a 30-minute lunch. On 37.5 net hours per week, the weekly billing is $37,500 and the annual billing reaches $1,950,000. This extreme case shows the engine handles very large wage magnitudes without overflow.

FAQ

How many hours is 9am to 5pm?

From 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM is an 8-hour shift on the clock. Subtract a typical 30-minute unpaid lunch and you are paid for 7.5 net hours. Over 5 working days that is 37.5 net hours per week — the standard full-time schedule most US employers use.

How do I calculate hours worked with a lunch break?

Take the difference between your clock-out and clock-in times in hours, then subtract the unpaid break. For example, 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM is 8 hours; an unpaid 30-minute lunch leaves 7.5 paid hours. If your break is paid, do not subtract it.

How do I calculate hours for an overnight shift?

If your clock-out time is earlier than your clock-in time (for example, a 10:00 PM start and a 6:00 AM finish), add 24 hours to the end time. That gives 30 − 22 = 8 hours on shift, before deducting any break.

How many work hours are in a year?

A standard 40-hour-per-week job over 52 weeks equals 2,080 work hours per year. A 37.5-hour-per-week schedule (8-hour shifts minus a 30-minute lunch, 5 days a week) equals 1,950 hours per year. This figure excludes paid vacation and holidays; actual paid hours are usually lower.

Is a 30-minute lunch counted as hours worked?

Usually not, if it is a bona fide unpaid meal period during which you are fully relieved of duty. Under the FLSA, short rest breaks of 5–20 minutes are generally paid, but uninterrupted 30-minute meal breaks are not. Set the Unpaid Break field to 30 in that case; set it to 0 if your lunch is paid.

How do I convert weekly hours to monthly hours?

Multiply your weekly hours by 52 weeks and divide by 12 months. For example, 37.5 weekly hours × 52 ÷ 12 = 162.5 hours per month. This treats every month as the average 4.333 weeks, which is the standard payroll convention.

It estimates net hours from the clock times and break you enter; actual payable hours depend on your employer's policies, applicable federal and state wage-and-hour laws (including the FLSA and state break rules), your employment agreement, and whether a meal period is truly unpaid.
