Baby Gender Calculator

Free baby gender predictor using the Chinese birth calendar and Shettler method. Just for fun — not medical advice or a scientific prediction.

Enter Values

years

The mother's age (in years) at the moment of conception. The Chinese chart uses lunar age 18-45.

month (1-12)

The lunar calendar month you conceived (1 = first lunar month, 12 = twelfth).

days

Shettler method: days intercourse happened before ovulation day. 0 = on ovulation day.

pH

Approximate reproductive-tract pH in the folk Whitten/Shettler idea. Below 7 leans boy, at or above 7 leans girl. Entertainment only.

Wondering whether your bundle of joy will be a boy or a girl? This baby gender calculator blends two of the most popular old wives' tales — the Chinese birth calendar and the Shettler ovulation-timing method — into one quick, playful prediction. Type in a few details and the result card tells you what each folklore method guesses, then combines them into a single "fun" verdict with an entertainment confidence percentage.

A quick reality check before you start: human sex is determined by the father's sperm at fertilization, and the real odds are essentially 50% boy / 50% girl every single time. Nothing on this page changes that. This tool is built purely for baby-shower icebreakers, nursery-decor daydreaming, and a laugh with your partner. It is not medical advice and it is not a scientific prediction.

How to Use

  1. Enter the Mother's Age at Conception — how old the mother was (in years) when conception happened. The Chinese chart covers ages 18 through 45.
  2. Enter the Lunar Month of Conception — the lunar-calendar month you conceived, from 1 (first lunar month) to 12 (twelfth lunar month). If you only know the solar date, many free lunar-converters online can help you convert.
  3. (Optional) Set Intercourse Days Before Ovulation for the Shettler method. Enter 0 if intercourse happened on ovulation day itself, 1 for the day before, and so on.
  4. (Optional) Enter your approximate Diet pH on a scale of about 5.5 to 8.0, where 7.0 is neutral. The folk Whitten/Shettler idea treats a lower (acidic) pH as a boy vote and a neutral or higher pH as a girl vote. You do not need a lab reading; this is a rough self-estimate for fun.
  5. Read the result card. The highlighted Boy Votes and Girl Votes lines are the running tally out of three; the three smaller lines show how the Chinese chart, the Shettler timing, and the diet each voted (1 = Boy, 0 = Girl). The side with more votes wins.

The engine collects three votes — one from the Chinese chart, one from ovulation timing, and one from diet pH — and the side with more votes wins. With three votes there is no tie, so the verdict is always a lean toward Boy or Girl; the confidence number is how unanimous that lean is.

The Two (Very Unscientific) Methods

Chinese birth calendar. This centuries-old folklore chart cross-references the mother's lunar age at conception against the lunar month of conception on an 18-by-12 grid. Each cell marks a traditional prediction of boy or girl. Despite endless internet claims of 90%+ accuracy, no controlled study has ever shown the chart beats a coin flip.

Shettler / Whitten method. In the 1960s, landrum shettler and David whitten popularized the idea that timing intercourse near ovulation favors boys (because faster-but-fragile "boy" sperm supposedly reach the egg first), while intercourse a few days earlier favors girls. They also suggested diet — alkaline vs. acidic — might shift reproductive tract chemistry. Claims of 75%+ success are not supported by large modern trials, and mainstream obstetrics groups do not endorse these methods for sex selection.

Examples

Example 1 — A 28-year-old who conceived in lunar month 6, on ovulation day, with a neutral-to-alkaline pH of 8.0. The Chinese chart reads Girl for age 28 / month 6. Ovulation-day timing votes Boy, and the higher pH votes Girl. The tally is 1 Boy vote and 2 Girl votes, so the majority fun prediction is Girl at about 67% entertainment confidence.

Example 2 — A 25-year-old who conceived in lunar month 5, three days before ovulation, with an acidic pH of 6.0. The chart itself reads Girl for age 25 / month 5; timing three days early also votes Girl, while the acidic pH votes Boy. The tally is 1 Boy and 2 Girl, so the fun prediction is Girl at about 67% confidence. That sounds definitive, but it is still just three old wives' tales in agreement.

Example 3 — A 30-year-old who conceived in lunar month 1, on ovulation day, with a neutral pH of 7.0. The chart reads Boy and ovulation-day timing votes Boy; the neutral pH leans Girl. With two boy votes out of three, the fun prediction is Boy at about 67% entertainment confidence. Take it with a truckload of salt.

Example 4 — The knowledge-base sample: a 28-year-old who conceived in lunar month 5, three days before ovulation, with an acidic pH of 6.0. The chart reads Boy for age 28 / month 5, the three-days-early timing leans Girl, and the acidic pH votes Boy. The tally is 2 Boy votes and 1 Girl vote, so the majority fun prediction is Boy at about 67% confidence — a tie-breaking demonstration of how the three votes combine. Remember this is entertainment only, not a medical prediction.

FAQ

How accurate is this baby gender calculator?

About as accurate as guessing — roughly 50%. The Chinese birth calendar and the Shettler method are folklore, not evidence-based medicine. Anywhere from 40% to 60% "accuracy" in anecdotes is well within the range of random chance, because every pregnancy starts with a 50% chance of either sex.

What is the Chinese birth calendar?

It is an ancient Chinese chart that pairs the mother's lunar age at conception with the lunar month of conception to guess boy or girl. This calculator looks those two numbers up on a standard 18-by-12 grid. It is a tradition, not a test.

What does the Shettler method actually say?

Shettler proposed that intercourse closer to ovulation favors boys (faster "Y" sperm win the race) and intercourse two or more days before ovulation favors girls (longer-lived "X" sperm survive the wait). This calculator applies that timing rule plus an alkaline/acidic diet nudge, strictly for entertainment.

Can I really choose my baby's gender with timing or diet?

No. Reliable sex selection before implantation requires medical procedures like PGT (preimplantation genetic testing) in an IVF clinic. Timing and diet folklore have not held up in rigorous studies, and natural conception remains an approximately 50/50 proposition regardless.

What actually determines a baby's sex?

Biologically, the sex is set at fertilization by whether the sperm carries an X or a Y chromosome. An X-carrying sperm produces a girl (XX) and a Y-carrying sperm produces a boy (XY). Every other folk method — charts, cravings, the wedding-ring pendulum, morning sickness intensity — is just storytelling.

When can I actually know my baby's gender?

The only medically accurate answers come from prenatal testing: an anatomy ultrasound around 18–22 weeks, or a non-invasive prenatal test (NIPT / cell-free DNA blood draw) as early as 10 weeks. These are the methods that matter; this calculator is just for fun.
