Christmas falls on December 25 every year, but the number of days between today and the next December 25 shifts constantly. This calculator counts exactly how many days, weeks, and hours remain until Christmas — and, importantly, automatically rolls to next year's Christmas if today is already past December 25. No timezone math, no manual year adjustment: type in the date you are counting from and the countdown appears instantly.

Whether you are planning a family trip, locking in a delivery cutoff, or just curious how much longer your holiday shopping window is, the answer is one screen away.

How to Use

  1. Enter the From Year — normally today's year. Change it to test a past or future date.
  2. Set the From Month as a number from 1 (January) to 12 (December).
  3. Set the From Day as a number from 1 to 31.
  4. Read the result card: it shows the days, weeks, and hours until the next Christmas, the exact date Christmas falls on, and the weekday.

The engine always targets December 25. If the date you entered is before December 25 of that same year, it counts forward to this year's Christmas. If the date is December 25 itself, the counter reads 0. If the date is December 26 or later, the engine automatically jumps to December 25 of the next year — so you never get a negative number, and you never have to remember to increment the year yourself.

How the Countdown Is Calculated

Christmas is a fixed calendar date: December 25. The math is straightforward Gregorian date subtraction:

daysUntilChristmas = nextChristmas − fromDate

Where nextChristmas is chosen by a simple rule:

  • Build thisChristmas = date(fromYear, 12, 25).
  • If fromDate ≤ thisChristmas, then nextChristmas = thisChristmas.
  • If fromDate > thisChristmas, then nextChristmas = date(fromYear + 1, 12, 25).

Weeks are daysUntilChristmas / 7, and hours are daysUntilChristmas × 24. The weekday code for nextChristmas runs from 0 (Monday) through 6 (Sunday): 0 = Monday, 1 = Tuesday, 2 = Wednesday, 3 = Thursday, 4 = Friday, 5 = Saturday, 6 = Sunday. So a code of 4 means Christmas lands on a Friday, and a code of 0 means it lands on a Monday.

Worked example: counting from October 24, 2026, thisChristmas is December 25, 2026. The from-date is earlier, so nextChristmas stays December 25, 2026. Subtracting gives 62 days, which is 8.86 weeks and 1,488 hours. December 25, 2026 falls on a Friday.

Why the Auto-Rollover Matters

A naive countdown that only subtracts two fixed dates gives a negative number the day after Christmas. That looks broken to anyone checking on December 26. Real countdowns — the kind you see on church marquees, school bulletin boards, and holiday websites — always show the next occurrence of the holiday. This calculator implements that behavior directly: once December 25 passes, the target moves forward one year, and the counter resets to a positive value.

That rollover rule is also what makes the tool useful year-round. In February, you are counting roughly eleven months ahead. In early January, the counter already shows about 360 days until the next Christmas. You can keep the page open and refresh it any time of year without adjusting any setting.

Planning Tips Based on the Counter

The number on the result card is more than trivia — it is a planning signal.

  • More than 90 days left. You are in the sweet spot. Airfare and hotel prices typically rise as Christmas approaches, so booking travel early can save 20%–40% compared with the last two weeks. This is also the best window to order personalized or engraved gifts, which often need 4–6 weeks for production and shipping.
  • 30–90 days left. Finish your list and start shipping. Free standard delivery cutoffs usually land around December 15–20, but retailers push that earlier every year. If you are budgeting for gifts, a common rule of thumb is 1%–3% of monthly household income per immediate family member, or a fixed dollar cap such as $50–$100 per close friend.
  • Fewer than 7 days left. Switch to in-store pickup or digital gifts. Overnight shipping can cost $25–$50 per package, which often doubles the price of the item. For last-minute travelers, driving instead of flying can be 60% cheaper for parties of three or more.

Examples

Example 1 — A normal October count. On October 24, 2026, entering fromYear 2026, fromMonth 10, fromDay 24 gives 62 days until Christmas. That is about 8.9 weeks and 1,488 hours. Christmas Day 2026 falls on a Friday, which means a long weekend for many US offices.

Example 2 — Christmas Eve / Christmas Day itself. Enter December 25, 2026 as the from-date. The counter reads 0 days, 0 weeks, and 0 hours — not −1, not 1, exactly zero. This is the boundary case where the target date and the from-date coincide.

Example 3 — The day after Christmas. Enter December 26, 2026. A naive calculator would show −1 days. This one automatically rolls forward to December 25, 2027, and reports 364 days — about 52 weeks and 8,736 hours. Christmas 2027 falls on a Saturday.

Example 4 — January planning. Enter January 5, 2027. The engine has already rolled past 2026, so the next Christmas is December 25, 2027. That is roughly 354 days away — long enough that booking holiday flights in early January can lock in fares 30% below December pricing.

FAQ

How many days until Christmas right now?

The result card includes a live Days Until Christmas (from today) line that reads your device's current date and counts to the next December 25 automatically — no need to type anything. The other three fields let you count from any other date: just set the From Year, Month, and Day.

What happens if today is after December 25?

The calculator automatically rolls to next year's December 25. You never see a negative number. For example, on December 26 it will count 364 days until the following Christmas.

Is Christmas always on December 25?

Yes, for Western (Gregorian) Christmas observance. Eastern Orthodox churches sometimes celebrate Christmas on January 7 (which is December 25 on the older Julian calendar); this calculator uses December 25.

How do I calculate days until Christmas by hand?

Find the next December 25. Subtract today's date from it. If today is past December 25, use next year's December 25 instead. The result is the days remaining; divide by 7 for weeks, or multiply by 24 for hours.

Does this calculator account for leap years?

Yes. The engine uses standard Gregorian date arithmetic, so leap-year effects (such as the extra day in February) are handled automatically. Christmas itself is fixed at December 25, which is never affected by leap day.

Can I use this to count down to Christmas in another year?

Yes. Set the From Year to any year from 1 to 9999. The engine will find the next December 25 after that date and report the countdown, including the year it lands on.
