Whether you are reading a European clothing size, following a US road-trip map, ordering fabric by the yard, or comparing a marathon route in kilometers against a half-mile swim, length numbers only become useful once they are expressed in a unit your brain actually trusts. A surprising amount of everyday confusion — from measuring a bookshelf to planning a 5K — comes from mixing inches, centimeters, feet, meters, yards, and miles without a clean conversion. This length converter calculator takes a value in any one of eight common length units and instantly expresses it in the target unit of your choice, so you never have to remember whether a foot is 30.48 centimeters or 0.3048 meters again.

Type the number, pick the starting unit, pick the target unit, and the result card shows the converted value along with the same length expressed in meters, feet, and miles. Those three reference columns make the page useful even when your target unit is something small like millimeters or large like kilometers, because meters, feet, and miles are the three units most adults already have an intuitive feel for.

How to Use

  1. Enter the Length Value you already know. It can be anything from a fraction of an inch up to millions of meters; the engine handles the magnitude without rounding errors.
  2. Enter the From Unit code — the unit that matches how the number was originally measured. The codes are: 1 = millimeter, 2 = centimeter, 3 = meter, 4 = kilometer, 5 = inch, 6 = foot, 7 = yard, 8 = mile. Common picks: millimeters for engineering, centimeters for height, meters for rooms, kilometers for road signs outside the US, inches for US construction, feet for US height, yards for fabric, miles for US road distances.
  3. Choose the To Unit — the unit you want the answer in. If you are comparing a European runner's 10 km with a US runner's 6.2 miles, convert both to a common unit. If you are reading a tape measure marked in inches but your plan is in centimeters, convert to cm.
  4. Read the highlighted Converted Value. Below it, the result card also shows the same length in meters, feet, and miles, so you can sanity-check the number against the unit you are most familiar with.
  5. Swap the From and To units to run the reverse conversion in one click. The relationship is linear, so 100 centimeters in feet and 3.2808 feet in centimeters use the same coefficient, just inverted.

The Conversion Constants You Should Know

Every length unit on this page is defined in terms of the meter, the SI base unit of length. Since 1959 the United States and the British Commonwealth have agreed on an international yard and foot that make every conversion exact — no surveying-foot rounding, no historical ambiguity. Once you memorize a handful of constants you can do rough conversions in your head:

  • 1 inch = exactly 2.54 centimeters (this is the single most useful constant; the inch was legally redefined to 25.4 mm in 1959).
  • 1 foot = 0.3048 meters = 12 inches, so 1 meter ≈ 3.281 feet. This is the most-used rough conversion outside the US: multiply meters by three, then add about a quarter again.
  • 1 yard = 0.9144 meters = 3 feet = 36 inches. A yard is only slightly shorter than a meter — about a 9% difference — which is why US and international track numbers are so often close but not equal.
  • 1 mile = 1,609.344 meters = 5,280 feet = 1,760 yards. For a quick mental switch, multiply miles by 1.6 to get kilometers; the error is under 2.5%.
  • 1 kilometer = 1,000 meters ≈ 0.6214 miles. To convert km to miles in your head, cut the kilometers by 40% (or multiply by 0.6).
  • 1 centimeter = 0.01 meters ≈ 0.3937 inches. A centimeter is roughly the width of a fingernail.
  • 1 millimeter = 0.001 meters = 0.1 centimeters, about the thickness of a dime.

The engine applies the simple identity result = value × (metersPer(fromUnit) ÷ metersPer(toUnit)). Because both sides of the ratio share the meter, the calculation is exact and never needs a lookup table beyond the eight constants above. There is no rounding during the conversion itself; only the displayed result is rounded to a sensible number of decimals.

Examples

Example 1 — Reading a European height chart. A woman's height is listed on a Paris clothing site as 168 cm. On this page, enter 168, choose From: centimeter, To: foot. The converted value is 5.51 feet, or about 5 feet 6 inches — close enough to a typical US 5'6" that you can immediately picture the size, instead of guessing whether 168 cm feels tall or average.

Example 2 — Comparing a fabric quote per yard vs per meter. A US upholsterer prices linen at $24 per yard, while a Belgian supplier quotes €18 per meter. Convert 1 yard to meters: 0.9144 m. The US price per meter is therefore roughly $26.25, while the Belgian price is €18 per meter. Once currency is applied, the side-by-side per-meter figure makes the comparison concrete instead of apples-to-oranges.

Example 3 — A road-trip distance. A US road sign announces the next city is 262 miles away. Convert to kilometers: about 421.6 km. For a European driver used to km signs, that is a comfortable half-day drive. The reverse — converting a 500 km Autoroute sign to miles — gives about 310.7 miles, which is why the two countries' highway numbers never line up neatly.

Example 4 — A 5% grade on a cycling climb. A climb is advertised as having a 5% grade over 3.2 km. Convert 3.2 km to feet: roughly 10,499 feet of horizontal run. Over that horizontal distance at a 5% grade, the vertical rise is about 160 meters, or 525 feet. Seeing the same route in kilometers, miles, and feet makes the climb's severity concrete instead of abstract.

Example 5 — Engineering precision. A CNC machinist programs a part in inches but the caliper reads in millimeters. Convert 0.125 inch (1/8 inch) to millimeters: exactly 3.175 mm. Because the inch is defined as 25.4 mm, fractions of an inch resolve to exact decimal millimeters without any guesswork.

FAQ

How many centimeters are in an inch?

One inch is exactly 2.54 centimeters. This is not an approximation — since 1959 the inch has been legally defined as 25.4 millimeters, so the conversion is exact to any number of decimal places. To convert roughly in your head, multiply inches by 2.5 and add a little; the error is under 2%.

How many feet are in a meter?

One meter equals 3.28084 feet (often rounded to 3.281). To get a quick estimate, multiply meters by 3 and then add about a quarter again. For the reverse, divide feet by 3.28 to get meters. This single ratio is the workhorse of most everyday length conversions.

How many kilometers are in a mile?

One mile equals 1.609344 kilometers (often rounded to 1.61). To estimate quickly, multiply miles by 1.6; the error is under 2.5%. For the reverse, multiply kilometers by 0.6 (cut the km by 40%) to get miles. This is why a 5K road race is roughly 3.1 miles, and a marathon (42.195 km) is 26.2 miles.

How do I convert height in feet and inches to centimeters?

First convert the feet to inches by multiplying by 12, then add the remaining inches. For example, 5 feet 9 inches is (5 × 12) + 9 = 69 inches. Then multiply 69 by 2.54 to get 175.26 cm. You can also enter the total inches directly into this converter and choose To: centimeter.

What is the difference between a mile and a nautical mile?

A statute mile (the one used on US road signs) is 5,280 feet = 1,609.344 meters. A nautical mile is 1,852 meters exactly, used in aviation and maritime navigation because it corresponds to one minute of latitude. One nautical mile is about 1.1508 statute miles. This converter uses the statute mile.

Can I convert millimeters to miles with this calculator?

Yes. Choose millimeters as the From unit and miles as the To unit. Because the engine routes every conversion through meters, even unusual pairs like millimeters to miles or kilometers to inches resolve exactly without a dedicated lookup table. The same is true for any combination of the eight units listed above.

Why is a yard slightly shorter than a meter?

A yard was originally defined as the distance from a king's nose to the tip of his outstretched hand, and its length drifted for centuries. In 1959 the international yard was fixed at 0.9144 meters to align with the metric standard, leaving it about 8.6 centimeters (roughly 3.4 inches) shorter than a meter. That small difference is why American football fields (100 yards) are not quite 100 meters long.
